March is Youth Art Month

March is a time to celebrate the arts in education!  Art promotes the 21st century skills: communication, critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity.  The West Allis-West Milwaukee School schools have a wonderful array of artwork on display at the administration building and the alternative learning center.  If you have a chance, stop by to see all of the creative art done by  kindergarten through high school aged students.

Students and families are invited to attend the opening reception on Sunday March 3rd from 1:00-4:00 pm.  Hope to see you there!

Frank Lloyd Wright Foam Designs

By Skylar

By Dominic
Students in 4th and 5th grade created a relief design by using colored foam.  Students were inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's stained glass designs in using the elements and principles of repetition, pattern, shapes, and lines.

Symmetry Snowflake Stained Glass

4th and 5th graders used the concept of symmetry to cut out large snowflake shapes.  Students were inspired by looking at images of real snowflakes in the book, " The Art of a Snowflake" by Kenneth Libbrecht.  We used color cellophane to fill the holes inside of the snowflakes so that this could be hung on the window as a stained glass piece.

Animal Art Sculptures

Day 1:  We formed the sculpture by using some recycled materials such as newspaper, paper towel rolls, cups, and lots of tape!  This is CJ's sculpture.

Day 2:  We covered the entire sculpture with plaster.

Day 3:  We painted our sculptures.

Mr. Weiss's 4th/5th grade boys have been working hard to create animal sculptures to connect with what they are studying in the classroom.  They took the two animals that they are researching for an inquiry project and used their imaginations to combine both animals into one.  Look at these great examples!
