Holiday Art at Jefferson

Tree sculptures created by first and second grade students.

Shrinky Dink art created by fourth and fifth grade students.

Snowman sculptures created by kindergarten and first graders.
Button wreath ornaments created by second and third graders.

"Tis the season" to give to others.  Jefferson students have been working hard, like little elves, to create holiday gifts to give to people who are important in their lives.

Melted Crayon Art

Look what a hair blow dryer and crayons can do!
Amazing results!

I found this idea on Pinterest, my new obsession.  I took crayons and hot glued them to the top of a canvas.  I used a hair blow dryer to heat up the wax in the crayon, which resulted in the wax melting and dripping onto the canvas.  The students and I worked on this project all week and our collaborative art piece is now hanging on display in the art room.  This is something that could be done fairly easily at home because all you need is crayons, glue, and a hair dryer.  I already had one student tell me that they tried doing this at home on black paper instead of white, which sounded interesting.

Art in the Community

There is holiday art on display at West Allis City Hall for the month of December.  Each school in the district has art pieces on display.  This is a wonderful exhibit of art from all grade levels.  What a great way of showing the community the importance of having the arts in schools!

An opening reception to celebrate the work will be on Tuesday, December 4th from 6:00-7:00pm.

The following students from Jefferson have their art piece on display: Anahi, Pamila, Kyra, Kenzie, Rebecca, Hailie, and Jacey.

Artwork for the West Allis Women's Club

Art students in Mrs. Zastrow's second grade class, Ms. Alt's multi-age first and second grade class, and Mrs. Simon's first and second grade multi-age class worked hard to create holiday art to donate to the West Allis Women's Club.  Students were very willing to give their art creations to the Women's Club as a thoughtful gesture during the holiday season.   Kudos to these students!

Turkey Time!

Students learned about warm and cool colors.

Students chose to color a coffee filter using only the warm or only the cool colors.

After we finished coloring, we sprayed the coffee filter with water and watched what happened when water mixed with marker.  Wow, look at the result!

We then cut and glued the other parts of the turkey.  Here is a warm colored turkey example.

This is a cool colored turkey example.

Thank you to all of the parents and students that stopped in the art room on Wednesday, October 24th for 1st quarter conferences.  It was nice to meet with all of you and talk about all of the great work your child is doing in art class.  If you didn't have a chance to stop in, be sure to see me for 2nd quarter conferences.  Look forward to seeing you soon!

American Art

Jefferson Elementary students created American themed artwork to go along with school-wide inquiry projects about government.  Students were inspired by the American flag and it's symbolism of citizenship.  Second and third grade combination classes created American flag weavings.  Third graders made red, white, and blue stars.  First and second grade students made stars by dipping marbles in paint and rolling it onto their paper.  (This was so much fun!)  Here are a few examples of the creations we made over the last couple of weeks.

Fall Fun!

4th/5th grade classes are currently working on their fall tree projects.   I love creating fall trees with my students because there are no two trees in real life that look exactly the same and the same goes with the students' artwork.   After observing different types of trees, students spent one class period painting a silhouette of a tree.  The next class we added color to the trees, along with discussing warm and cool colors and how to mix colors using oil pastels.  Look at the beautiful results!

Jefferson Elementary Art Club

I am excited to head my first after school art club.  My first group of art club members are some of the fifth graders from Mrs. Geiss's class.  The artists for quarter 1 are: Livia, Zoe, Calee, John, Santo, and Jeremiah.  These students are currently working on a beautiful mural in the front hallway, leading up to the office.  Wow, this is already brightening up this hallway!  I can't wait to see it completed!
